The Kenya Mining Investment Conference & Exhibition 2024, held at the Argyle Hotel in Nairobi from November 26-27, brought together over 300 stakeholders from Africa, Europe, and Asia. Under the theme “Exploring the Role of Critical Minerals in Strengthening Foundations and Unlocking Business Opportunities for a Sustainable Future,” the event was a pivotal platform for discussing Kenya’s potential in the critical minerals value chain and its alignment with global energy transition goals.
The conference featured insightful exhibitions and discussions on policy reforms, value addition, community empowerment, and sustainable practices. Delegates agreed on the importance of formalizing artisanal miners, fostering regional collaboration, and introducing cutting-edge technologies to address environmental risks in mining. Among the highlights was a commitment to enhance the sector’s contribution to Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals through updated policies, local beneficiation, and economic inclusivity.
Ms. Gillian Becky, representing Geol Gist, participated as a panelist in the session on “The Implications of Global Demand for Critical Minerals on the Environment and Local Communities.” The discussion emphasized balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship and equitable benefit-sharing, particularly in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM).
The event concluded with actionable next steps, including policy updates, pilot projects for ASM cooperatives, and skills development programs through the National Mining Institute. Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering sustainable mining practices to position Kenya as a regional leader in the critical minerals market.
Stay tuned to Geol Gist for continuous updates as we work towards integrating these strategies into our mission to professionalize ASM and advocate for sustainable mining solutions.
