The changing the face of the extractive sector: the Voi Gemstone Value Addition and Marketing Centre. For too long, Kenyaβs precious minerals from Tsavorite to Tanzanite have been exported as “rough” stones, leaving the majority of the profit margins in overseas markets. In our latest field dispatch, Geol Gist takes a technical look at the domestic processes that are finally keeping that value home.

Value addition is where geology meets precision engineering. During our visit, we explored the three primary methods used to elevate raw minerals into high-value assets. Faceting, this is the most technical stage, where flat faces (facets) are cut onto a gemstone at specific angles to maximize light reflection. Using precision faceting machines, raw crystals are transformed into the sparkling gems found in high-end jewelry. Cabochon cutting, for stones that are opaque or have unique internal features (like star sapphires), the “Cabochon” cut is used. This involves shaping and polishing the stone into a smooth, rounded convex shape rather than cutting facets. Tumbling, even lower-value rough stones have potential. Through tumbling a method of polishing stones in a rotating barrel with abrasive grit mass quantities of raw material are converted into smooth, polished gems used in decorative arts and accessories.
Beyond the machines, the Voi Centre is a hub for Capacity Building. As we explored in the video, the centre is dedicated to training a new generation of Kenyan gemologists and lapidary artists. By teaching these skills locally, we are ensuring that the “Mineral Economics” of the region benefit the community directly.
At Geol Gist, our mission is to support this evolution through subsurface intelligence and sustainable resource management. Understanding the value-addition stages is key for any investor or consultant looking to modernize the sector. When we move from being “exporters of raw dirt” to “providers of polished value,” the entire economy of the gemstone belt is uplifted.
