Our journey with beVisioneers: The Mercedes-Benz Fellowship began with a single, ambitious question: How can we transform the critical mineral supply chain to be as green as the technologies it powers? Supported by Mercedes-Benz and implemented by The DO School, this fellowship provided the perfect launchpad to bridge the gap between high-level sustainability goals and the practical needs of artisanal miners in Kenya. For Geol Gist, this wasn’t just a training program; it was a strategic alignment of our technical expertise with a global vision for a decarbonized future.

The core of our participation focused on the “invisible” side of the green transition the minerals. While the world discusses electric vehicles and renewable grids, the reality of how those raw materials are extracted often remains fraught with environmental and social challenges. Through the fellowship’s intensive foundational year, we refined our project to focus on sustainable exploration and the “cleaning” of the gold supply chain. We realized that for the transition to be truly “just,” it must empower the communities at the very start of the value chain.

A major milestone of our journey was the shift toward de-risking artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). Through the fellowship’s venture coaching and mentorship, we moved beyond simple geological reporting to creating a holistic model for impact. We successfully integrated GIS mapping and remote sensing data to identify “Green Zones” areas where miners can operate with minimal environmental footprint and maximum safety. This technical de-risking is what allows local communities to finally access the fair markets they deserve.

Sustainability, we learned, is as much about people as it is about geology. One of our proudest accomplishments during this period was the development of our philanthropic training modules. We transitioned from being “service providers” to “impact educators,” designing curriculum specifically for mining cooperatives. These sessions focus on mercury-free processing and gravity-based recovery, ensuring that “Clean Gold” isn’t just a marketing term, but a tangible reality for families in rural Kenya who rely on these resources for their survival.

This expertise allowed us to advise mining communities not just on how to mine, but on how to power their operations using renewable energy. By replacing diesel generators with solar-powered processing units, we are helping the ASM sector reduce its carbon footprint while simultaneously lowering operational costs for the miners.

Being a fellow within the beVisioneers global network provided a platform for cross-continental collaboration. Engaging with fellow eco-innovators from Europe and across Africa allowed us to benchmark our solutions against international standards.  Today, as we look toward the future, the impact of our beVisioneers journey is clear. Geol Gist has evolved into a digital and technical hub that champions the “Great Green Transition” from the ground up. We have proven that with the right combination of technical “know-how,” ethical commitment, and community empowerment, we can create a stable supply chain that honors the earth and its inhabitants. Our mission continues: ensuring that every gram of mineral extracted contributes to a cleaner, fairer, and more resilient global economy.
