At Geol Gist, we are committed to driving sustainable development through innovative solutions. One of our flagship projects, supported by the Bevisioneers Project Scholarship and funded by the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Fellowship, focuses on uplifting artisanal gold miners in Siaya County, Kenya. This planet-positive initiative aims to professionalize small-scale mining operations while transitioning to more environmentally friendly methods.
Artisanal miners face numerous challenges, from limited access to modern equipment to the use of hazardous materials like mercury in gold extraction. These limitations not only reduce productivity but also pose significant risks to miners’ health and the environment, especially when it comes to pollution and the degradation of local ecosystems.
Through our equipment leasing project, we provide miners with access to high-quality, mercury-free machinery on a lease-to-own basis. This approach allows them to improve their mining operations without the upfront costs associated with purchasing new equipment. The leased equipment includes compressors, winches, and other essential tools designed to increase production efficiency, improve gold retrieval quality, and reduce environmental impact.
In addition to the leasing program, we offer comprehensive training sessions to build miners’ capacity and ensure safe, sustainable mining practices. Our goal is to empower these miners to operate more efficiently while adhering to environmentally responsible practices. This includes providing guidance on safe tailings disposal, water conservation, and sustainable land management, all aimed at minimizing the harmful effects of mining on the environment.
Through this project, we are not just supporting miners; we are fostering long-term change. By professionalizing artisanal mining and transitioning away from mercury use, we are helping the Siaya community protect their natural resources, create safer working conditions, and unlock new economic opportunities. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to creating lasting, planet-positive impacts in partnership with the Bevisioneers Fellowship and Mercedes Benz.
